Abstract

The methods considered for the detoxification of soil in A zone of Seveso are reported. Of all the methods proposed and evaluated at laboratory level (incineration, photodegradation, gamma rays, ozone, solvent extraction, dechlorination) none was judged suitable for successful transfer to the "industrial" scale. Therefore methods of collecting and of disposing of the waste were evaluated. The decision taken was to collect the contaminated materials (vegetation, rubble of demolished houses and scarified soil) and dispose them in two basins in the A zone itself. Technical specifications and costs are also given.
