Abstract

In June 1983 the JRC mobile unit equipped with a remote sensor for SO-2 and particles participated in the 6th European Campaign on Remote Sensing of Air Pollution held in the Fos-Berre industrial area, South France, under the sponsorship of DG XII G and French national and regional authorities. The region is characterized by a complex orography and the associated wind breeze circulation can promote high pollution episodes in the warm season. A primary objective of this Campaign was the evaluation of SO-2 industrial emission and the characterization of its dispersion by the use of remote sensing and classical techniques. This paper is concerned with the evaluation of the single sources emission from the Cospec data and the three-dimensional wind field reconstructed by a mathematical model. In general, a good agreement between computed and claimed emissions is observed; the limitations in the adopted procedure are mainly to be related to the poor information on sources or to unpredictable wind parameters.
