SOCIAL SPACE FOR DOMESTIC ANIMALS. PROCEEDINGS OF A SEMINAR HELD IN BRUSSELS ON JANUARY 10-11, 1985.
This volume contains the proceedings of a seminar, held in Brussels, 10th-11th January, 1985, at the CEC Directorate General for Agriculture. In contrast to other books on welfare and stress of farm livestock, this volume emphasizes the relation between spatial measures and social behaviour structure. One major objective of the seminar was to present experimental results obtained in a CEC research programme on social space, esp. the requirements of battery caged laying hens, but also those of other domestic animals, with emphasis placed on the problems created by density (sections II and III). The second major objective was to provide and discuss available information from experiments on social space in laboratory animals and in domestic animals observed in non-intensive environments. A multidisciplinary approach was promoted, physiological and elementary cognitive processes involved in social spacing and adaption to confinement or overpopulation were discussed as well as problems relating to applied ethology, veterinary medicine and agricultural sciences (sections I and IV).
