Résumé

Over the past 3 million years, the world has been in the grip of a climatic crisis, which was marked, 700,000 years ago, by the development of massive ice caps in the Northern Hemisphere. The last major glacial expansion began 70,000 years ago, and ended less than 10,000 years ago. Since then, the climate has warmed slightly, and then cooled again. Looking at the size and frequency of Quaternary climatic fluctuations, it seems unlikely that the ice age is yet over. A new glaciation, which is likely to be seen during the next 100,000 years, would cause the sea level to drop by some 120 m. If, however, all the ice caps were to melt during the present inter- glacial period, the sea level would rise by some 80 m.
