Abstract

This report describes the work accomplished under contract ESF-027-G(B). The existing station at the National Observatory of Athens has been augmented by instruments for measurements of direct and diffuse irradiance and of selected regions of the spectrum of the incoming direct radiation. Measurements were obtained at altitude 1020 m to study the effect of the change in turbidity, caused by air pollution, on the absorption of the radiation. All existing measurements of solar radiation, sunshine duration etc. for Athens and selected places in Greece have been collected, digitized and organized in a data base available to anyone interested. Algorithms have been produced and tested for the calculation of solar radiation parameters. For more detailed, transient simulations of solar energy systems a typical meteorological year has been compiled comprising appropriate hourly values from different months and years. These results have been reported in two papers with three more in preparation. The measurements and the analytical work are also providing the basis for three new investigations of similar topics.
