PYROLYSIS AND GASIFICATION OF WOOD UNDER PRESSURE
The realization of the wood gasification pilot unit of Clamecy, which will be operated under pressure needs that the physico-chemical behaviour of wood during pyrolysis and gasification is well known. A thermal balance (allowing to evaluate the kinetics of pyrolysis/gasification reactions), has been experimented under pyrolysis conditions and four determining parameters of the fluid bed reactor have been investigated: the fluidizing gas velocity, temperature, wood chips size, pressure. Results are presented, showing that the reaction of pyrolysis of wood chips (diameter > 5 mm) is mainly limited by the internal heat transfer in the biomass particle: this explains why the influence of parameters such as the fluidizing gas velocity and pressure is only significant in a limited range and that we rapidly reach a limit in the pyrolysis rate.
