Poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) gum acrylic rubbers promise well for embedding solar cells, due to high transparency and weathering resistance. Our work aimed at optimizing this system and counteracting drawbacks the solar cells were potted floating with a self made acrylic rubber by a casting process. A new redox initiator system was developed, and the monomer composition of the acrylic rubber optimized to obtain good adherence to PMMA and embedded materials. The final internal level of water content depends on the long term average level of surrounding relative humidity; the water uptake of embedding rubbers was considerably decreased by using copolymerizing hydrophobic monomers. The surface of PMMA is relatively sensitive towards scratching; tests showed that roughening of the surface considerably increased liability towards soiling. By coating the PMMA cover by a polysiloxane it is protected against wearing and the reflectance losses are diminished. The problem of temperature resistance has not yet been solved. The panel is sealed by a thermoplastic acrylic polymer, which hitherto is not completely stable concerning its shape; to avoid leakage of sealing, the panels were framed; their performance is being tested in Central European climate.
