EINSCHMELZEN VON RADIOAKTIVEN METALLISCHEN ABFAELLEN AUS DER STILLEGUNG
By melting of radioactive metallic waste coming from dismantling or refurbishing of nuclear installations, a volume reduction by a factor of approximately 5 can be achieved. The contamination mostly existing in the form of surface activity, can be fixed in a manner to allow measurement for release based on mass specific limits. It was found that Co 60 is homogenized in the iron by the melting operation, and that Cs 137 is bound to a great extent in the slag. Possibilities of suitable applications for non-detrimental reuse in the nuclear area, are shown. The studies concentrated on a safe system technique. During several test series, different filter concepts were tested. Based on the results obtained, a concept proposal for an industrial scale melting plant and the pertaining auxiliary systems, was elaborated.
