Résumé

The combustible vegetable matters occur in various forms and their manipulation and utilization have proved difficult and onerous (calorific power and density in bulk poor). The transformation of straw into granules represents the best solution to this problem. The classical granulation techniques are costly and mobile installation for granulating straw at a lower cost has therefore been studied. The principle is based upon an excess of drying which makes the straw fragile and diminishes the necessity for a binding agent at the time of agglomeration. The initial tests were undertaken in a suspended excess dryer which provided the best thermic exchange. But the difficulties encountered in controlling the time of the process and providing a homogeneous product caused this solution to be abandoned in favour of a metallic conveyer belt with recirculation of gas. The straw being more friable, it is no longer necessary to pound it finely and rough cutting undertaken with the CEMAGREF cutter is entirely acceptable for this procedure. Numerous problems still remain in the compacting with classical presses, but the cavity press devised at CEMAGREF should represent an important step forward.
