Abstract

Grain boundary design is considered from the point of view of grain boundary microchemistry, including the various ideas and procedures for controlling the content of residual species at grain boundaries through a knowledge of segregation mechanism. In particular, thermochemical calculation procedures are now available for predicting gettering reactions in multicomponent systems. These offer promising possibilities for controlling impurity species to within their tolerance levels.
