Abstract

The fully relativistic dispersion relation for the extraordinary mode around the electron cyclotron frequency is investigated, both analytically and numerically, for propagation perpendicular to the magnetic field and a (relativistic) loss cone distribution. Both the wave dispersion and the (spatial) absorption, which can be positive or negative, as well as the (w-p/w-c)-range for the absolute maser instability are evaluated and discussed.
