Abstract

In recent number of NTvN-B**1 G. C. Dijkhuis describes a model he proposes to explain the phenomenon of ball lightning and fireballs. To sum up: a previous model proposed by Dijkhuis admitted the possibility of thermonuclear phenomena. However there were various objections to the model from the point of view of the physicist, which led to its subsequent abandonment. The next model proposed by Dijkhuis was not based on thermonuclear principles and was inconsistent since the most important interactions were disregarded. Furthermore, the postulated expansion and final state were not acceptable. Attempts to reinvolve the fusion principle, by means of further ad hoc assumptions, are incompatible with large areas of scientific knowledge and known characteristics of ball lightning. We conclude, therefore, that the Dijkhuis model affords no prospect of explaining the phenomena of ball lightning and fireballs and has nothing to offer for the design of a fusion reactor.
