Abstract

The report describes the preparation of 3 full cream milk powder reference materials and the certification of their aflatoxin M-1 contents: RM 282 < 0.05 mug/kg (a blank) RM 284 0.31 +- 0.06 mug/kg RM 285 0.76 +- 0.05 mug/kg Particular attention is paid to the preparation of materials containing aflatoxin M-1 in a natural state through a procedure in which cows were given feed having controlled levels of aflatoxin B-1. The report presents full details of the tests of homogeneity and stability and of the certification exercise itself which involved 12 laboratories and a variety of chromatographic methods. Also presented is a summary of the 2 intercomparisons of methods that preceded the certification together with some guidance on the avoidance of the principal sources of error in the determination of aflatoxin M-1.
