SOLAR RADIATION DATA FROM SATELLITE IMAGES
The present book was initiated within the Commission's Solar Energy R&D Programme. It provides an overview of the possibilities to determine solar radiation on the ground level from satellite images. Together with three important research laboratories, a new set of methodologies was produced and validated after many years of development work. The methods which are described in this book will enable one to determine solar energies on the ground level with an accuracy better than 10%. For most of the work, images from the European Meteosat were used but images from the American satellites NOAA were also taken into account. The ? methods are relatively cheap because computer times are reasonably low. In this way, a new convenient route becomes accessible to determine solar radiation data quickly and cheaply almost everywhere on the globe. In particular, in certain countries where a good measuring network for solar radiation up to the quality standards of the World Meteorological Organization is not currently available, it will now become possible to produce reliable data as are needed for any solar energy application. It will also become possible to set up special solar radiation data sets in the frame of particular R&D programmes as they are being implemented, for instance, in the pilot and demonstration programmes of the European Community.
