Abstract

Eurocode 4 provides the basis for the design and construction of composite structures made of structural steel and reinforced or prestressed concrete mechanically connected together, and proposes operational rules for application. Eurocode 4 is concerned with buildings and civil engineering structures. The basic principles apply to all types of composite structures or elements consisting of a interconnected so as to act together to resist loads. However, they do not cover all aspects relevant to special structures, such as composite structures prestressed by tendons which are not a part of the cross-section (external tendons), certain types of bridges (e.g. cable stayed girders), nuclear containment vessels or marine platforms. The scope does not include encased composite beams and piles for foundations. The implicit inclusion of a type of structure does not imply that all details of its design and execution are covered conclusively. The rules for application given principally refer to composite structures whose concrete part is covered by EC2 and steel part is covered by EC3. They should be used in conjunction with the corresponding clauses of those Eurocodes.
