Abstract

Experimental results of in-pile and out-of-pile tests with liquid saturated particle beds and theoretical models on channel formation are reviewed. An extension of LIPINSKS model is proposed on the basis of a concept of sticking forces between the solid particles. The influence of vapour channels on the inception of dryout is modelled by an increased permeability in the channeled layer of the particle bed. As a result it follows that in contrast to bed disruptions channels will not be drastically increase the coolability of a debris bed
