Abstract

Fundamental electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) has been studied in CLEO tokamak at 28 GHz. Substantial bulk heating has been observed in all cases and the variation of heating efficiency with electron density, toroidal magnetic field and plasma current has been investigated. ECRH assisted start-up at 28 GHz has resulted in the production of well controlled discharges with loop voltage VP-* < 2V throughout. The average loop voltage during the current rise was ? 1.1V corresponding to an electric field of 0.19 V/m giving a current rise of 0.44 MA/s. The effect of second harmonic heating at 60 GHz on the operational density limit in CLEO has been studied. It ? was possible to lower the I/N limit (N identical to n-epia**2) from 1.7 x 10**-14 to 1.0 x 1**-14 A during ECRH.PR
