Abstract

Calculations with CONDIF-02 have been performed for two UO-2 particle diameters: 1 and 7.2 mm and for UO-2/Na mass ratios 10 and 6. The time evolutions of the temperature in the middle of the sodium layer are calculated for four cases. As shown, a sodium superheating is perfectly able to produce a pressure peak of 6 MPa in a time corresponding to experimental results. A detailed analysis of the special form of the peak and of the thermal expansion phase is beyond the scope of this paper. The advance of the UO-2 solidification front during the temperature increase of the sodium is presented. In both mass ratios the solidification front remains sufficiently far from the particle center, to not invalidate the constant physical properties approach (as a matter of fact, after complete solidification a contraction cavity is formed with about half the original diameter).
