Abstract

In the lower hybrid experiments on ASDEX, an intense flux of fast ions (E <= 3 keV) is observed with the charge exchange diagnostic in the perpendicular or quasi-perpendicular direction, above a density threshold of 2 . 10**-3. It was shown that these ions are probably generated close to the plasma edge and therefore badly confined: they disappear as soon the RF is turned off (tau <or= 1 ms). A method is presented which gives the radial extension of the region where the ion - wave interaction takes place and the resulting experimental values for the perpendicular index of the wave as a function of the radius in this region.
