Abstract

Using an optical theory recently developed for hollow circular dielectric waveguides, the power transmission of a Gaussian beam through circular waveguides with low or high conductivity wall material is derived. The conditions of validity of the calculations are specified. The transmission formulas allow the investigation of the influence of the wall material and the determination of ? the optimal material giving the lowest waveguide losses. The results are interesting for applications to transmission lines and waveguide lasers. For example, the transmission formulas are used in the study of waveguides for the IR interferometer of the JET tokamak. Using classical optical laws, interpretation and discussion are made to give a better understanding of the results.
