NEW APPLICATIONS OF THE ECR LONGITUDINAL WAVE PROPAGATION
The development of powerful millimetric CW sources opens a wide field of applications. In all published theoretical and experimental work on plasma heating and current drive by ECR waves on toroidal configurations, only O and X modes have been considered or used. The longitudinal waves (linearly and left-hand and right-hand circularly polarized) have never been taken into consideration with the "a priori" motivation that they are not suitable in toroidal configurations. The object of this paper is to show in what conditions these waves can be used for TOKAMAK plasma start-up. Three other applications - plasma heating, current drive and impurity control by a microwave bundle divertor - have been presented elsewhere; nevertheless, this paper will give a short outline of how the system proposed for plasma start-up can also be used for current drive.
