A NUMERICAL MODEL OF THE MIRROR ELECTRON CYCLOTRON RESONANCE MECR SOURCE
Results from numerical modeling of a new type of ion source are presented. The plasma in this source is produced by electron cyclotron resonance in a strong converging magnetic field. Experiments have shown that a well defined plasma column, extended along the magnetic field (z-axis) can be produced. The electron temperature and the densities of the various plasma particles have been found to have a strong z position dependence. With the numerical model, a simulation of the evolution of the composition of the plasma as a function of z is made. A qualitative agreement with experimental data can be obtained for certain parameter regimes.
