Abstract

This document summarises the key design elements of a test plant for pressurized gasification of biomass, to be used to establish future operational parameters and process equipment specifications for commercial facilities. It is a multi-functional plant permitting operation with selected parameters such as temperature, pressure, flow rates and alteration of the reactor geometry and type within the system. The final programme related to the experimental work has still to be completed, but valuable lessons have been learned, particularly in areas feeding, material selection and safety considerations. A significant uncertainty concerning design of solids feed systems to pressurized systems was found. Theoretical studies were used for reviewing wide ranging experimental programmes, related to chemical equilibrium in the carbon hydrogen oxygen system, they show designing a test plant to operate at pressures in excess of 10 bars is unproductive. The current plant status is that major design and construction has been completed. Some cold commissioning has been undertaken, (feed system). The results of a long term FWPP market assessment, appended, suggest that there is little immediate commercial interest in pressurized biomass gasification per se.
