MODEL BASED DECISION SUPPORT AND RISK MANAGEMENT
This paper describes the aims, scope, and software architecture of a simulation-based information, decision support, and expert system for interactive risk assessment and model-based decision support in the area of industrial risk and hazardous substances management. Implemented on a dedicated microcomputer workstation, this interactive system combines database management, system simulation, operations research techniques such as optimization, interactive data analysis, elements of advanced decision technology, and artificial intelligence, with a friendly and conversational, symbolic display oriented user interface. Important features of the interface are the use of several parallel or alternative styles of interaction and display, including color graphics and natural language. Combining quantitative numerical methods with qualitative and heuristic descriptions, and giving the user direct and interactive control over the systems function, human knowledge, experience and judgement are integrated with formal approaches into a tightly coupled man-machine system through an intelligent and easily accessible user interface. Designed with and around modern operating systems in a multi-lingual programming environment, a prototype application developed at IIASA under contract to the CEC - JRC is briefly described.
