Abstract

The fabrication technology of MX-type (M = actinides; X = carbon and/or nitrogen) advanced breeder fuels as uranium-plutonium carbide and nitride, is generally based on the carbothermic reduction process of oxides, with subsequent crushing and ballmilling of the reaction product, pressing, and sintering. A new fabrication procedure, the direct pressing (DP) method, based on the carbothermic reduction process without intermediate comminution is presented. The reaction product, pellets or granulate, is directly processed to pellets. MX powder handling and dust generation within the working area are avoided. Principle and advantages of the new fabrication procedure are reported. Fuel and fabrication data for (U,Pu)C,(U,Pu)N and UN pellets prepared by the DP method are given.
