RADIATION RISKS TO THE DEVELOPING NERVOUS SYSTEM. PROCEEDINGS OF AN INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM, JOINTLY ORGANIZED BY CEC AND GSF, HELD AT NEUHERBERG NEAR MUENICH, ON JUNE 18-20, 1985.
The nervous system represents the critical tissue when man is exposed to ionizing radiation during a certain period of his prenatal development. This has been demonstrated by recent detailed studies on survivors of the atomic explosions exposed in utero. It is uncertain, however, from which threshold dose, if any, such damage arises, whether small doses of radiation could cause more subtle effects, and finally whether other embryotoxic agents could potentiate radiation damage.
