MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS RESEARCH IN EUROPE. PROCEEDINGS OF A CONFERENCE HELD AT NIJMEGEN (NL) ON JANUARY 29-31, 1985.
This volume contains the papers read at a conference on multiple sclerosis research in Europe, which was sponsored by the CEC and held in January 1985 at Nijmegen, with the aim of formulating practical proposals for a multinational, multidisciplinary approach to M.S. The conference was divided into five sections, proposals for coordinated research formulated for each: 1) Clinical studies and therapeutic trials (standardization of data collection; studies of placebo response and aspects of psycho-neuro-immunology); 2) Immunology (T cell clone and T cell line studies of the CSF); 3) Biochemistry, neurobiology, myelin (scrutinizing of "normal" white matter in M.S. brains, early lesion in M.S., clarification of NMR findings in relation to pathology, further investigation of the biochemistry of myelin, myelinogenesis and remyelination, vital studies in mechanisms for triggering auto-immune reactions in the brain and dysfunction of brain cells, neurovirulence and viral persistence in the brain); 4) HLA, epidemiology, genetics (study of HLA antigen frequencies in multicase families, twin studies for investigation of environmental and genetic causes); 5) Imaging and neurophysiology (investigation of neurophysiology of conduction disturbance, new neurophysiological measuring techniques for early diagnosis, relation between biochemistry and NMR signal, tagging of NMR traceable cells, and combination of NMR spectroscopy).
