Abstract

The purpose of the 5th international workshop on stellarators held jointly in the frame of the "IAEA Technical Committee meeting on "plasma confinement and heating in stellarators" and the "Max Planck Society" was to review the latest achievements and status of experimental and theoretical investigations on stellarator physics as well as the prospects for the development of a stellarator fusion reactor. the general topics of the sessions were: (i) overview of experimental results in stellarators, (ii) topical details of experiments including interpretation: heating, transport phenomena and impurity behaviour; (iii) theory of equilibrium, stability and transport phenomena; (iv) machines under construction or approved until September 1984; (v) configurations; reactor studies. An invited lecture on mirror physics was included in the workshop because of certain similarities regarding transport and stability behaviour of plasmas in these different confinement schemes.
