Abstract

The FARO facility at JRC-Ispra is used for LMFBR safety research. The facility, the experimental programme and numerical model developments are presented. The experiments include: melting of 100 kg of UO-2 in the high-temperature furnace FARO and studies in the test sections BLOKKER and TERMOS. Information is given concerning the status of the plant. The capability of the furnace to melt UO-2 quantities in the range of 100 kg is demonstrated. Attempts are described to release the melt into the test section BLOKKER I (studies on ablation of structural material by impinging molten UO-2 jets). Computer codes, developed for each area, are presented. Parallel research on MFCIs of intermediate scale is also reported.
