TEMPERATURE CONTROL TEST ON FULL SIZE SPHERICAL HTR FUEL ELEMENTS IN THE HFR PETTEN
An irradiation rig with two spherical fuel elements and two graphite spheres is currently being irradiated in the High Flux Reactor (HFR) Petten. The in-core positions used are relevant for the forthcoming proof tests of low enriched uranium (LEU) fuel elements for future High Temperature Reactors (MODUL, HTR-500), and also for previous HTR LEU fuel elements irradiations. The test samples are instrumented with thermocouples located in the centre and on different radii to measure the temperature field under irradiation. This experiment, the first of its kind, provides a representative data set which enables an accurate temperature of the proof test samples which must remain undamaged prior to the start for the experiments. The described test will be terminated at the end of 1986. This paper gives a description of the experiment and first results after an attained neutron dose of 3.3x1025 m-2 (E>0.1 meV). This experiment is being conducted by JRC Petten together with KFA Juelich and the HBK Project.
