THE CONTRIBUTION OF CREDIT INSTITUTIONS TO THE RENEWAL OF THE ECONOMY. PROCEEDINGS OF A CONFERENCE HELD IN LUXEMBOURG ON NOVEMBER 28-29, 1985.
Europe is experiencing a relative decline of the so-called traditional industries as a result of worldwide economic recession, radical redistribution of market shares and increasing internationalization of our economies. Investment and its financing have a crucial role to play in revitalizing the economy and reorganizing our production machinery. This book contains the proceedings of the sixth symposium of the Commission of the European Communities on the financing of innovation and the 1985 session of the "Journees d'etudes financieres" of the Institut Universitaire International, Luxembourg. The aim of this joint conference was to examine the initiatives which credit institutions are taking or ought to be taking, to contribute to the renewal of the European economy. It examines the fundamental role of enterprises, on both a large and a small scale, on the basis of case studies and considers the problems of financing encountered by enterprises at different stages in their development, paying attention to start-ups, expansion and diversification. It also looks at the role of credit institutions as partners in enterprise alone in conjunction with venture capitalists, for example . The technological and innovative effort on which the revival of our economy depends involves a huge and innovative financial effort. The financial sector of our economy is already taking steps to meet the new demands, with venture capital now becoming a major factor in the expansion of high growth industries.
