Abstract

This volume contains the proceedings of a seminar held at Athens in May 1984 under the auspices of the Commission of the European Communities as part of the Concerted Action COST 681 "Treatment and Use of Organic Sludges and Liquid Agricultural Wastes". The COST 681 Working Party N**o 1 organised this seminar to review and discuss some of the important new developments in anaerobic digestion. Anaerobic digestion is the most widely used method for stabilizing sewage sludges; it is also now becoming an important method for treatment of agricultural wastes. A considerable amount of research and development on anaerobic digestion has been carried out in recent years both in the sewage and the agricultural waste fields. There are both similarities and differences in the two types of waste but much of the fundamental microbiology and many of the process design and engineering aspects are of common interest. It was the aim of the seminar to bring together experience and knowledge on anaerobic digestion from both fields and to highlight progress.
