Abstract

A composite based on the technology of the A-15 compound Nb-delta-3Al has been designed as part of a study contract given to the ENEA Superconductivity Laboratory by the NET team. The work has been performed in close connection with the other SULTAN partners (namely ECN - Petten and SIN - Villigen) and the aim was to assess the feasibility of such a conductor for the 12 T toroidal field coils of the NET reactor. Using the Nb-3Al "jelly roll" technology developed by the ENEA a conductor consisting of a Rutherford cable cooled by forced flow of supercritical helium has been proposed and examined to some extent. In the paper details relative to a.c. losses, mechanical structure, stability and quench behaviour will be given altogether with some considerations about fabrication technology and problems.
