Abstract

The high temperature corrosion mechanisms of several types of silicon nitride were studied. The compositions and essential processing parameters of the materials are described. The corrosion equipment, capable of 1500 degrees C and 5 bar pressure, is also discussed. Tests were conducted in model atmospheres at high temperatures for up to 1000 hours. Structural analysis to assess the nature and extent of the chemical and mineralogical alterations characteristic of the corrosion were carried out: XRD, optical microscopy, SEM, EMPA, ESCA and TEM. The results of the experiments are discussed and the corrosion properties of the different materials critically compared.
