Abstract

A survey is presented on the challenging debate about new computer architectures which are expected to exploit the opportunities offered by the rapidly diminishing costs of processing power. New possibilities are emerging for parallel and distributed processing architectures. They are all demanding in terms of new programming techniques and new interprocessor communication facilities. The design characteristics of the supporting networks are presented here as a contribution to this debate. The effective interworking of expert systems and other fourth and fifth generation systems may in particular ask for new services to be provided by the network facility. Some aspects of the DUAL proposal constitute a preliminary attempt to the direction of making networks programmable and deal with flexible multicast and synchronization scenarios. These features are expected to support parallel processing on a larger scale.
