AN INTERPRETATION OF DISRUPTIONS IN TOKAMAK SIMULATIONS
The broad spectrum of explosively growing modes observed in multihelicity tearing mode simulations of tokamak plasmas can be accounted for by a non-physical feedback mechanism. It is shown that spatially discretized magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations admit both attracting finite time singularities and exponential, but bounded, deviations from solutions of differential MHD. Finally, means of avoiding the non-physical behaviour, which is characterized by poor energy conservation, are given.
