Abstract

In 1978 the Standing Committee on Agricultural Research (SCAR), which is an advisory committee of the Commission of the European Communities, set up a Programme Committee on Plant Resistance and Use of Gene Banks as part of the second programme (1979 - 1983) on agricultural research. The Programme Committee in turn set up several working groups of which the Potato Working Group was one. The Potato Working Group decided to concentrate its work on two main tasks. The first was the preparation of a list of descriptions of characteristics of cultivated potato varieties. The Programme Committee decided that this work was to be carried out in close cooperation with the International Board for Plant Genetic Resources (IBPGR) in Rome, as indeed was the case with the other crops dealt with in the programme. The second task was the compilation of an inventory of all potato varieties in collections in the 10 Member States of the European Communities, a task which was undertaken with great enthusiasm by Dr. Henry Kehoe of An Foras Taluntais, Oak Park Research Centre, Carlow, Ireland, who assembled all the available information from colleagues in the Member States. The first draft was circulated to scientists in 1983. For the third programme on agricultural research (1984 - 1988), a Programme Committee on Plant Productivity has been set up by the SCAR. This committee decided to complete the work in progress of the Potato Working Group. The inventory was updated in 1985 and includes information on more than 1600 varieties in collections in the 10 Member States. In future this inventory will serve as a basis for work in compiling data on yield, quality and disease resistance characteristics of all varieties listed.
