Abstract

Business service is one of the most rapidly growing sectors in the economy. Business service is important both to itself as an increasing part of the service sector, and as a prerequisite for an integrated part of the productive sectors. Therefore, it is important for the peripheral regions that they get their share of the business services. With the Danish town of Esbjerg in West Jutland as a case, the book investigates the structure and development of selected business service sectors as seen from a provincial centre. The investigation is based partly on a mail questionnaire analysis in which a sample of firms in Esbjerg and its hinterland were asked about their use and acquisition of business services, and partly on extensive interviews with directors of business service firms in the town on the development trends in their sector. The book concludes with a set of policy proposals to promote the development of business services in a main provincial centre.
