Abstract

The evolution of FT could be along two paths; either the further exploitation of ohmic heating, increasing the magnetic field and the tightness of the machine, or the increase of additional heating at the present level of toroidal field. We have chosen the latter line in designing the FT-Upgrade machine; this will have increased plasma dimensions, R=0.93 m, a=0.31 m, and, given the success of LH heating on FT, will be able of accepting about 10 MW of LH power. For the density limit law reported previously, the frequency should be about 8 GHz in order to heat a plasma at the maximum performance of the machine. A preliminary test of such a frequency at low power (about 400 kW) will be performed on FT in the near future.
