COMPARING HYDRO- AND THERMAL CHARACTERISTICS OF SODIUM TWO-PHASE FLOW IN GRID AND WIRE SPACED BUNDLES
The hydro- and thermodynamic characteristics of an LMFBR core are determined among others by the bundle design of which the pin spacing is obtained by grids or wires. In order to obtain quantitative information on the different behaviour of these two design principles, the Ispra laboratory of the European Communities is performing long range tests with bundles of the same design features but without the spacers. Bundles with wire and grid spacers are used for tests with the same boundary and initial conditions in order to measure transients from single phase flow to two phase flow and the steady state boiling characteristics. The main objective of this test programme is to measure the effect of the type of spacer design on the boiling characteristics as for example pressure drop, heat transfer and dry out. Preliminary results are reported for pressure drop and dry out heat flux.
