Abstract

Experiments were carried out on laser driven shock wave propagation in a transparent target using high speed shadowgraphy. The following results are presented: (A) A comparison of shock wave pressures at two laser wavelengths (lambda = 1.3 mum and lambda = 0.44 mum). (B) Scaling of shock pressures in dependence on absorbed laser intensity. (C) Observation of breakdown in transparent targets at the two laser wavelengths. (D) Observation of plasma jets. (E) Observation of unipolar arcing on the front side of the target.
