Abstract

This report describes a programme of work to develop commercial manufacturing procedures for new electrocatalysts for the production of hydrogen by alkaline water electrolysis. The anode catalyst was lithiated cobalt oxide and the cathode catalyst was nickel cobalt sulphide. These materials had been demonstrated on a laboratory scale by Tseung et al in the period 1975 - 1979 as part of the CEC's first 4-year Hydrogen Energy R&D Programme. This subsequent commercial development work, which formed part of the second 4-year programme, was planned to fall into two parts: (a) the development of procedures for manufacture of similar catalysts and suitable commercial scale electrode structures to support them. (b) to install these electrodes in an elecrolyser of proven design for trial in a power station. A consortium comprising Inco Alloy Products Ltd., CJB Developments Ltd., and the Central Electricity Generating Board carried out the work on catalyst and electrode development, modified the design of an existing electrolyser to meet CEGB operational and safety requirements and built a pilot scale trial rig. In all, only part of the programme could be carried out due to difficulties encountered.
