Abstract

This paper gives a detailed and reasoned description of the design and manufacture of coil systems for a given set (JET's) of tokamak parameters. The paragraphs on the design of toroidal field coils inform on the type of coils (water cooled magnets), level of magnetic field (moderate), give the reasoning behind the choice of number and shape of coils, their cooling, and describe their mechanical supports and internal construction. The next chapter gives a reasoned account of the manufacture of these toroidal field coils (copper conductor, joggling and machining of copper bars, winding of D-shaped coils, brazed joints vacuum impregnation with epoxy resin, the soft and sliding layer used, followed by a section on the assembly of the toroidal field coils and the mechanical structure. A similarly detailed and reasoned description is then submitted for the design, the manufacture, and the assembly of the poloidal field coils, and for the design of their mechanical structure. A description of the manufacture of the outer mechanical structure, and a short outlook on the operation of the coil systems round the paper off.
