HYDROGEN AS THE ENERGY CARRIER IN A CLEAN ENERGY SUPPLY SYSTEM USING DIRECT AND INDIRECT SOLAR ENERGY. FIRST DRAFT OF A PILOT PROJECT
Hydrogen originating from water and split with solar energy is an excellent means to store, transport and use solar energy. Hydrogen is a carbon free fuel which oxydizes to water as combustion product. The generated water becomes, together with solar energy as a primary energy source for splitting it, a source of clean and abundant energy in a carbon-free, natural cycle. The main difficulty is to economically produce the hydrogen by water splitting, which requires free energy of high temperatures. A hydrogen-based, clean energy supply concept comprising the production of hydrogen by hydropower, its transportation to Europe, and its storage and use in different forms, is feasible today and is described in the paper. The economic aspects are treated in a rather concise manner which the author considers sufficient in the actual, not yet industrialized state of technology. The paper conveys the message to demonstrate and therewith to start to build now, with existing technology, a clean and abundant energy system which would allow to prevent rather than to cure environmental or oil shortage mishaps.
