BLOOD COMPATIBLE MATERIALS AND THEIR TESTING. PROCEEDINGS OF 2 MEETINGS HELD AT THE HAGUE (NL) ON MAY 18-20, 1984 AND AT SIENA (I) ON MARCH 28-30, 1985.
The present book continues the line of publications as a result of the European Concerted Action EUROXY, sponsored by the CEC. The aim of this coordination programme is to enhance the cooperative activity in the member countries on selected scientific topics and to establish better links to European Industry. The edited contents of this book are the result of two meetings, held in The Hague, Holland, May 18-20 1984, and in Siena, Italy, March 28-30 1985; their subject is the blood changes following exposure to synthetic polymers, the bodily reactions, and the difficulty of measuring the parameters. Several contributions evaluate the measurements of a number of parameters and relate them to long-term extracorporate circulation. Measurement of the surface changes can be followed through a number of presented methods; different in-vitro and ex-vivo testing methods of compatibility properties are presented; and families of new elastomers are outlined together with references on resistance towards degradation. Methods for surface modification are presented which render polymers blood compatible; thorough studies and surveys are given, including molecular description of the modification protein. Also included is an outline of biological modification by endothelial overgrowth, and a survey on the limitations of factors for cellular adhesion and proliferation.
