Abstract

The electronic structure of the actinides will be briefly reviewed and special emphasis will be given to the drastic change in 5f electron behaviour which takes place when one proceeds from the light to the heavy elements. A similar change is found for the AmRh-3 intermetallic systems as a function of the actinide atomic number, although the transition seems much more gradual than for the pure elements. The calculations to be presented show paramagnetism for the earlier systems AcRh-3, ThRh-3, PaRh-3 and URh-3, but indicate itinerant magnetism for NpRh-3 and PuRh-3. Only for AmRh-3 and CmRh-3 do the 5f electrons appear to be localized in the same way as the 4f electrons are in the corresponding lanthanide systems. Electronic structure calculations for some other actinide transition metal compounds will also be reviewed. Here we will especially consider magnetic aspects and also the change of the d-f hybridization as a function of the transition metal partner. Actinide dihydrides display for the earlier actinide elements quite different behaviour than the corresponding rare earth compounds. Only for PuH-2 and heavier systems does one seem to recover normal rare earth-like properties. We suggest that NpH-2 is a quite likely candidate for mixed valence behaviour, a property which up to now has remained difficult to unequivocally identify in actinide systems.
