Abstract

The size distributions of two particle size reference materials, BCR 67 and BCR 69, have been measured via the electrical sensing zone (esz) method. A mass integration method of calibration of the esz instrument was employed in which BCR 67 and BCR 69 were used as self-calibrants. The esz results agree with the certified results, obtained via classical sedimentation methods, within the stated standard deviations. It is concluded that the esz technique, employing the mass integration method of calibration, is suitable for the size analysis of these two materials providing that suspensions are efficiently stirred to counteract sedimentation and that the esz orifice tube is flushed frequently to remove excess particles which settle inside the orifice tube.
