DEVELOPMENT OF AN IRRADIATION CAPSULE FOR THE INVESTIGATION OF IODINE RELEASE UNDER LOCA CONDITIONS FROM PWR FUEL RODS
Within the irradiation programmes on light water reactor (LWR) fuel at HFR Petten, investigations are under preparation to determine the rate of iodine release from PWR fuel rods and its solution in steam and water in the event of a LOCA - scenario. Within this programme at HFR Petten, fuel rods (segments) which have been pre-irradiated in commercial power reactors are re-irradiated in order to build up a typical iodine inventory. The re-irradiated fuel rods are then transferred either to a hot cell device or to an irradiation device, both of which are capable of simulating the hypothetical LOCA - scenario and providing means for determination of iodine release during the LOCA process. The design and results of the out-of-pile characterization of the irradiation device for the Iodine Solubility and Degassing Experiments (ISOLDE) will be presented and discussed.
