Abstract

The effect which various flow straighteners have on the discharge coefficients of orifice plates has been measured. The straighteners were positioned at various distances from the orifice plates; those distances including the recommendations of American and International Standards. Results indicate that the straighteners can have very significant effects (greater than 1 per cent) on orifice plate coefficients and that the effect varies with type of straightener, diameter ratio of orifice plate and proximity of the straightener to the orifice plate. The positions prescribed by Standards are shown to be less than ideal.
