SURVEILLANCE OF RENEWABLE NATURAL RESOURCES IN SAHEL
Within the framework of its collaboration with the African countries of the Sahel zone, the EEC attaches particular importance to problems of food safety and of the degradation of ecosystems. It is for this reason that General Management VIII (Development Aid) and its funds for countries associated with the Lome Convention (European Development Funds FED) have come, within the framework of the special programme "War against hunger in the world" to finance two activities named, on the one hand "nutritional strategies" and "thematic actions" on the other. These two parts of a single programme aim to ensure the proper functioning of food aid but also to promote research and application projects whose aim is to develop methods of surveillance of the natural surroundings and evaluation of agricultural production in the countries of the Sahel zone. The project in question comprises, under the heading "nutritional strategies", a research project explicitly aimed at the spatial applications of remote sensing as a result of the place of choice of this new technology in the elaboration of diagnostics which are at one and the same time synoptic and dynamic. Thematically the stress is put on the development of methods aimed at forecasting production of pluvial food crops (millet, sorghum, maize) and submerged rice.
